Loughborough University, often known as just “Lboro” to its student population, is a dynamic and vibrant institution. 

It began life as Loughborough Technical Institute in the county of Leicestershire. From these humble beginnings in 1909, it gained university status in 1966. Since then, it’s gone from strength to strength to become one of the UK’s leading universities.

Is Loughborough a Russell Group university?

Loughborough University isn’t a member of the Russell Group. This prestigious club consists of 24 research intensive UK universities, known for their commitment to academic excellence. Nonetheless, Loughborough boasts several cutting-edge research centres addressing both global and national challenges.

There’s no doubt, Russell Group membership is a significant accolade. But it isn’t the only mark of quality university education in the UK. Several highly ranked and extremely competitive universities aren’t counted among its number. This includes St Andrews University, Bath University and of course, Loughborough.

Is Loughborough a prestigious university?

As we’ve seen, Loughborough University ranks between 7th and 10th in national league tables.

While rankings give you an idea of a university’s academic standing and student satisfaction (among other things), they aren’t the be-all and end-all.

When you’re choosing a university, think holistically. By this we mean focusing on your personal interests (how does the university rank for your subject?) and the overall environment. Do you prefer a campus or living amongst an established community? How important are green initiatives and sustainability to you? And what about extra-curricular clubs and sports facilities? 

In terms of student satisfaction (for example), The Times ranks Loughborough above all members of the Russell Group. It’s also unrivalled for its sports-related degrees and ranks top in the 2023 QS World University Rankings for sport. Yes, that’s right. Top out of any university in the entire world. And it’s been there for seven years running.

Why is Loughborough ranked so high?

Indeed, Loughborough was named “Sports University of the Year” not once, twice, but three times. It’s runner-up for 2024, just losing out to Nottingham.

Is the University of Loughborough hard to get into?

But the good news is Loughborough also accepts a wide range of qualifications for their courses. This includes BTECs, International Baccalaureates, Scottish Highers and Cambridge Technicals (to name just a few).

Loughborough’s typical grade offers differ depending on the course. Some subjects are much more competitive than others, and therefore harder to get into. Given  Loughborough’s excellence in Sports (for example), related degrees have some of the highest grade requirements.
