It’s a beautiful and leafy campus university in the heart of England, offering an unparalleled student experience and world-leading sports facilities. But if you’re interested in Loughborough, you probably know that already!
You might have also heard the term “Russell Group” thrown around a bit. So is Loughborough part of this prestigious group too?
In this introduction, we’ll explore Loughborough’s academic affiliations, what this young and exciting university is best known for, why it’s ranked so highly and whether it’s a hard nut to crack when it comes to admissions.
Let’s get started.
Loughborough University: A Brief Overview
Loughborough University, often known as just “Lboro” to its student population, is a dynamic and vibrant institution.
It began life as Loughborough Technical Institute in the county of Leicestershire. From these humble beginnings in 1909, it gained university status in 1966. Since then, it’s gone from strength to strength to become one of the UK’s leading universities.
Loughborough University stands out not just because of its academic prowess but also its picturesque surroundings. The main campus is set within 440 acres of greenery, creating a serene and inspiring atmosphere that’s perfect for calm and focused study.
In 2013, the university also purchased the former broadcast centre at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park near Hackney Wick in London. Used as a second campus, it helps cater to the university’s 19,000+ student body.
So whether you’re after green fields and a market town atmosphere or the buzz of trendy East London, Loughborough’s got it all.
But what about it’s academic results and affiliations?
Is Loughborough a Russell Group university?
Loughborough University isn’t a member of the Russell Group. This prestigious club consists of 24 research intensive UK universities, known for their commitment to academic excellence. Nonetheless, Loughborough boasts several cutting-edge research centres addressing both global and national challenges.
There’s no doubt, Russell Group membership is a significant accolade. But it isn’t the only mark of quality university education in the UK. Several highly ranked and extremely competitive universities aren’t counted among its number. This includes St Andrews University, Bath University and of course, Loughborough.
Is Loughborough a prestigious university?
Absolutely!
Although Loughborough University isn’t a Russell Group member, it’s carved an impressive niche in the higher education world.
Loughborough consistently sits among the top universities in various national and international rankings, cementing its reputation as a prestigious institution.
Here’s its overall position in some of the most respected UK league tables:
- The Times and Sunday Times University Rankings: 10th
- The Guardian University Rankings: 10th
- The Complete University Guide: 7th
In terms of international league tables, Loughborough ranks 212th out of 2,960 institutions in the QS World University Rankings. This is Loughborough’s highest ever position.
What rank is Loughborough University?
As we’ve seen, Loughborough University ranks between 7th and 10th in national league tables.
While rankings give you an idea of a university’s academic standing and student satisfaction (among other things), they aren’t the be-all and end-all.
When you’re choosing a university, think holistically. By this we mean focusing on your personal interests (how does the university rank for your subject?) and the overall environment. Do you prefer a campus or living amongst an established community? How important are green initiatives and sustainability to you? And what about extra-curricular clubs and sports facilities?
In terms of student satisfaction (for example), The Times ranks Loughborough above all members of the Russell Group. It’s also unrivalled for its sports-related degrees and ranks top in the 2023 QS World University Rankings for sport. Yes, that’s right. Top out of any university in the entire world. And it’s been there for seven years running.
So if sports is your bag, you really can’t get any better…
Why is Loughborough ranked so high?
There are many reasons for Loughborough’s high ranking. First and foremost, its commitment to excellence in teaching and research. The university invests heavily in both these areas, ensuring students receive a top-notch education.
Loughborough is a research-intensive university. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework, over 90% of its research was rated “internationally excellent” or “world leading”.
The university is also home to CREST, one of the most respected renewable energy research groups in the country. It was awarded seven Queen’s Anniversary prizes for research expertise in areas such as sports, optical engineering, social policy, high-value manufacturing as well as vehicle, road and driver safety.
In addition to research, Loughborough is renowned for its strong ties to industry, providing students with exceptional opportunities for work placements and internships. These real-world experiences set graduates up for career success, a factor contributing to the university’s high standing.
Last but not least, Loughborough boasts a vibrant and diverse campus life. From clubs and societies to cutting-edge facilities, the university offers a well-rounded student experience. Loughborough’s supportive community and cutting-edge resources are simply unparalleled by most universities.

Indeed, Loughborough was named “Sports University of the Year” not once, twice, but three times. It’s runner-up for 2024, just losing out to Nottingham.
