Should I apply to Russell Group universities?

Applying to Russell Group universities can be an excellent choice. As we’ve already seen, they’re prestigious for good reason! But it’s not a one-size-fits-all decision. 

Here are four factors to consider when making your choice.

1. Academic suitability

Ensure your grades (or predicted grades) align with the entry requirements of Russell Group universities. 

To do this, head to the relevant course pages of each university you’re applying to and look at the grades or UCAS points they ask for. Get in touch with their admissions department if you have any questions.

Each university will have different expectations, so it’s important to do your research before making final selections.

2. Research specialties

Different Russell Group universities excel in different fields. They might also have strong connections with industry partners, which will differ from uni to uni.

Think about the city or town where the university is located. If possible, spend a weekend visiting the local area and the university itself.

Do Russell Group universities accept BTECs?

The good news is most Russell Group universities accept BTECs (that’s Business and Technology Education Council qualifications in case you didn’t know).

Gone are the days when people looked down on BTECs as “just vocational” courses. Now, BTECs are widely considered equivalent to A-levels, and many universities recognise and appreciate their value.

What are the best non-Russell Group universities?

Despite Russell Group universities’ well-deserved reputation for teaching and research excellence, some great UK universities aren’t members of the group – offering equally excellent programs and opportunities. 

Some of the best non-Russell Group universities in the UK include the University of St. Andrews, Bath University, Lancaster University, the University of Surrey and Oxford Brookes University.

For instance, the University of St Andrews (a 600-year-old institution based in Scotland) regularly makes it into the top three universities in the UK, alongside Oxford and Cambridge. Bath University was named “University of the Year” by The Times Good University Guide 2023 as well as ranked 5th best in the UK by the Complete University Guide.
