Bath University: A brief overview

Bath University’s story began back in 1856 when it started life as Bristol Trade School. By 1960, the school became the Bristol College of Science and Technology and earned its university status six years later. 

Looking for more space, the university moved to its current location in 1965. It’s situated about 1.5 miles from Bath city centre at Claverton Down. 

Today, Bath University welcomes over 17,300 students. It’s home to around 13,500 undergraduates and 3,800 postgraduates.

19% of this student population comes from overseas (from over 100 different countries!), creating a really exciting, diverse environment.

And although Bath is a campus university, you aren’t stuck for options. There’s a regular bus service running to and from the city, right into the small hours. So whether you fancy strolling through regency architecture and green parks, visiting relaxed cafes or partying in bustling bars – there’s something for everyone.

Is Bath a Russell Group university?

It’s one of the most common questions. So let’s get this out the way. Is Bath a Russell Group university? 

The short answer is no. But if you think that means Bath isn’t a prestigious university, it’s time to think again. While it isn’t a Russell Group university, Bath is one of the most respected institutions in the UK. It’s well-known for high academic standards and strong student satisfaction.

The Russell Group is an exclusive club of 24 leading public research universities in the UK. But even though it’s not a member, Bath has some seriously impressive accolades. It was named “University of the Year” by The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023. 

It’s also ranked fifth in the UK by the Complete University Guide 2024, up three places from their 2023 ranking. In fact, Bath is only behind the “Stoxbridge” trio of St Andrews, Oxford and Cambridge, and the London School of Economics and Politics.

Is Bath a good university to attend?

Absolutely! 

Bath University has well and truly earned its accolades. Not only was it named “University of the Year” by The Times and Sunday Times – its students also agree.

Bath students helped the university rank fourth highest in the UK for undergraduate experience. It also boasts some pretty impressive course completion rates (at 96.2%), showing students are more than happy to finish their time at Bath.

As well as student satisfaction, Bath also boasts impressive employability stats. 92% of Bath students go on to further studies or professional employment straight after graduating. It’s also ranked fourth for Graduate Prospects by the Complete University Guide, only behind Imperial College London, Cambridge University and St George’s University of London.

What is Bath University best known for?

Bath University has a stellar reputation in various fields. The university particularly excels in science, engineering, architecture, sports and management. 

Bath has ten courses in the Guardian University Guide 2024 top five. This includes a top spot for Sports Science, as well as a third for Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering and Education.

Overall, Bath is well-regarded for its emphasis on student satisfaction, employability and research quality. The university nurtures future professionals (with plenty of industry links) and its course completion rate is one of the best in the country. 

As well as its academic reputation, Bath is known for leading sports facilities. The university boasts an Olympic-sized swimming pool, as well as an athletics track, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, all-weather pitches and a Sports Training Village hosting many elite British athletes.

If creative pursuits are more your thing, Bath is also known for “The Edge” – a specialised creativity and wellbeing hub. It includes a theatre, multiple performance spaces, dance, fine arts and digital design studios.

Is Bath a hard university to get into?

Bath University’s entry standards are competitive. While they vary by course, you’ll probably need AAA or AAB.

Admissions depend on factors such as the specific program, your academic qualifications, extracurricular experience and your individual application. 

Bath asks for a minimum of three A Levels (or the equivalent in other qualifications such as BTECs). Applicants with four A Levels won’t have a competitive advantage, but they will take your three best grades. So this does give you an extra shot at getting the grades you need!

Some courses also have preferred subjects and subject combinations. While you don’t necessarily have to study these subjects, if you’re applying for competitive courses – you might be less likely to get an offer.

Is Bath a top ten ranked university?

Yes!

Bath University has risen through the ranks and now sits firmly in the top ten best UK universities. Its recent position in national league tables speaks volumes on its commitment to academic excellence, research quality and student satisfaction.

There are a few different university league tables, but here’s Bath’s 2024 position in each:

• The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide: 8th
• The Guardian University Guide: 6th
• The Complete University Guide: 5th
• The Daily Mail University Guide: 10th

In terms of international league tables, Bath ranks 148 out of 1,499 institutions in the QS World University Rankings. It also made the top 100 for six subject areas, including Architecture, Business and Management, Development Studies, Psychology, Social Policy and Sports.

What university group is Bath in?

As we mentioned earlier, Bath University isn’t a member of the Russell Group. 

The university does have several other affiliations though. 

This includes membership of the Wallace Group (a group of seven UK universities supporting sports and health programs in developing countries), GW4 (a group of four research–intensive universities in Wales and South West England), the European University Association and Universities UK.

Is Bath or Bristol University more prestigious?

While Bath and Bristol universities each have unique strengths, Bath has made remarkable progress in recent years. 

It climbed to eighth position in The Times league table and is the highest-ranked university in the South West. It beats Bristol in the Complete University Guide and The Guardian rankings too. So in terms of league tables alone, Bath University is more prestigious.

However, the choice between the two depends on your specific academic and career goals. If you’re interested in humanities subjects like Philosophy, History or English Literature (for example) – these are only offered at Bristol.

You should also consider which city you’d prefer to live in for at least three years. Bristol is far larger with renowned nightlife and a buzzing arts scene, whereas the city of Bath is smaller, more historic and very safe. 

Bristol and Bath are just over ten miles apart (with regular connecting trains and buses), so why not visit both universities in one weekend to decide for yourself?
